Apple Introduces Metal 4 Graphics API With Native AI Capabilities for Mac Developers

Apple introduced Metal 4 with native AI capabilities built directly into its graphics API at WWDC 2025, enabling Mac developers to run AI computations on GPU without cloud dependencies for the first time.

Metal 4 represents a breakthrough for Mac-based AI development, allowing applications to execute AI workloads locally with performance and privacy advantages. Previously, serious AI development on macOS required workarounds or cloud-based solutions, putting Macs at a disadvantage compared to NVIDIA CUDA-equipped systems.

The integration means Mac applications can now compete directly with NVIDIA CUDA-based systems for AI workloads, bringing professional-grade AI development capabilities to native Mac apps. This could shift AI development back toward native applications instead of web-based solutions that rely on external servers.

Developers can build AI features that run locally with better performance and privacy, particularly valuable for applications handling sensitive data. The technology leverages Apple’s custom silicon (M-series chips) to deliver hardware-accelerated AI inference without requiring constant internet connectivity.

Industry analysts view Metal 4 as Apple’s attempt to make Macs viable AI development platforms, addressing criticism that the company’s machines lagged behind in machine learning capabilities despite impressive hardware specifications.
