Ubisoft Montpellier just pulled off one of gaming’s most pleasant surprises in years. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launches today as a 2.5D Metroidvania — a bold departure from the franchise’s 3D action-adventure roots — and it is simply excellent. Metacritic sits at 88, making it one of the highest-rated Ubisoft titles in over a decade.
The Montpellier-based studio delivered a precision action platformer with tight, responsive controls, a creative time-manipulation mechanic that evolves throughout the campaign, and a stunning hand-painted visual style inspired by Persian mythology. Combat is fast, deep, and rewarding — comparable to the best in the genre.
The game’s success is a statement about the enduring appeal of the Metroidvania format when executed with care and craft. It’s also a reminder that French game development — Ubisoft Montpellier specifically — has a long tradition of producing exceptional 2D action games. At €39.99, it’s one of 2024’s best value propositions.
The Lost Crown deserves to be played by everyone who loves tight, intelligent game design. Don’t sleep on this one.
