The Game Awards 2023 gave gaming its most deserved GOTY in years: Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios swept the ceremony, winning not just Game of the Year but Best RPG, Best Community Support, and Best Multiplayer. The Belgian studio’s magnum opus — a 100+ hour D&D epic with unprecedented player agency — has redefined expectations for what a single-player RPG can be in 2023.
The reaction in the room when BG3 won was extraordinary. Larian founder Swen Vincke gave a passionate, unscripted speech that encapsulated everything the game represents: ambition, care, and love for the player. The standing ovation lasted minutes.
Beyond the awards, the night delivered major reveals. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach showed full gameplay. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater confirmed its launch window. Hades II showed gameplay for the first time. And a new Nier project from Yoko Taro was teased.
2023 was a generational year for gaming. Baldur’s Gate 3, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Alan Wake 2 all in the same twelve months. Larian taking the crown feels right.
