iOS 16 Is Out: Lock Screen Customization Changes Everything

iOS 16 has been rolling out to compatible iPhones since last week, and the consensus is clear: this is one of Apple’s most user-facing updates in years. The headline feature — Lock Screen customization — sounds modest on paper but feels transformative in practice. Widgets, custom fonts, depth-effect wallpapers, and layered photo cutouts have turned the iPhone lock screen into a genuinely personal canvas.

But beyond the visual revamp, iOS 16 packs a host of under-the-hood upgrades worth talking about. iMessage editing and unsend is already proving to be one of the most-used features among early adopters — finally catching up to what Android users have had for years. Live Text in video, improved Dictation with on-screen keyboard support, and a smarter Focus mode system round out the package nicely.

For privacy-first users, iOS 16 also introduces Safety Check — a dedicated tool to help users in dangerous situations quickly review and revoke access to their location, accounts, and data shared with others. It’s a thoughtful, important addition.

Compatibility runs from iPhone 8 onwards, meaning a massive installed base is now upgrading. If you haven’t yet, the lock screen customization alone makes it worth it. iOS 16 is the update that reminds you why the Apple ecosystem still leads on software polish.
