Gamescom 2022 returns to Cologne in full physical form after two years of digital-only editions, and the reception is thunderous. With over 265,000 attendees descending on Koelnmesse, this is the gaming community’s biggest in-person reunion in years — and the announcements don’t disappoint.
Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley, delivered a barrage of reveals. Hogwarts Legacy confirmed its February 2023 release window. Dead Island 2 showed extended gameplay. A new Sonic Frontiers trailer raised eyebrows. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty from Team Ninja was a standout surprise. The PC gaming community got its fill with major updates from Xbox and Bethesda, with Forza Motorsport and Starfield gameplay both making appearances.
On the show floor, NVIDIA showcased RTX 4090 demos pushing ray tracing to new extremes. AMD countered with RX 7000 series teasers. Xbox was present in force with hundreds of Game Pass titles playable, and PlayStation had a strong indie showcase including From Software’s Elden Ring DLC hints.
After two years behind screens, having 265,000 gamers under one roof in Cologne is a reminder of what live gaming events do that no stream ever can. Gamescom is back. Long may it run.
