December 2008 NPD: Wii Dominates Holiday Sales While PS3 Lags Despite Strong Exclusive Lineup

NPD Group reported December 2008 sales data revealing Nintendo’s continued market dominance as Wii sold 2.15 million units and DS moved 3.04 million units, while Xbox 360 captured 1.44 million sales and PS3 lagged at 726,000 units despite strong exclusive lineup.

The holiday results demonstrate Wii’s mainstream appeal transcending traditional gaming demographics, with Wii Play (1.46 million) and Wii Fit (999,000 units) dominating software charts alongside Mario Kart Wii (979,000). Call of Duty: World at War led multiplatform titles with 1.33 million Xbox 360 copies versus 533,000 PS3 sales, highlighting Xbox 360’s software advantage.

PlayStation 3’s disappointing 726,000 December sales occurred despite Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 exclusive launches throughout 2008. The persistent sales gap versus Xbox 360 (which has sold 17.7 million lifetime in North America versus PS3’s 7.5 million) suggests Sony’s $399 price point remains prohibitive compared to Xbox 360’s $199 Arcade SKU.

Wii’s 2.15 million December sales pushed its 2008 calendar year total above industry expectations, cementing Nintendo’s strategy of targeting casual audiences with accessible controllers over high-definition graphics arms race. The console sold out repeatedly throughout 2008, with supply constraints limiting sales potential rather than consumer demand.

Industry analysts note 2008’s combined software and hardware sales exceeded $21 billion, setting new industry records despite economic recession concerns. However, the results reveal sharp console segmentation—Wii dominates casual/family market, Xbox 360 captures core gamers, while PS3 struggles finding sustainable positioning beyond exclusive-driven enthusiast appeal.
