PlayStation 3 Finally Launches in Europe After Five-Month Delay

Sony launched PlayStation 3 in Europe and Australia on March 23, 2007, nearly five months after North American release, allowing Xbox 360 and Wii to establish dominant market positions while PS3 struggled with manufacturing constraints and $599 pricing deterring mainstream adoption across key territories.

The delayed European launch stemmed from Blu-ray manufacturing bottlenecks limiting PS3 production to approximately 1 million units through end-2006. Sony prioritized Japan and North America for initial shipments, leaving European gamers frustrated and competitors gaining critical holiday sales momentum.

Industry observers note the prolonged delay damaged PlayStation brand loyalty in Europe, traditionally Sony’s strongest territory where PS2 dominated the previous generation. Xbox 360’s 16-month head start and lower pricing allowed Microsoft to convert many PlayStation fans before PS3 became available.

For Sony, the European launch represented a watershed moment testing whether the PS3’s technical capabilities and exclusive franchises could overcome pricing disadvantages and delayed availability. Initial European sales proved solid but failed to match PS2’s launch trajectory.

Analysts predict Sony must deliver compelling exclusive titles throughout 2007-2008 to justify PS3’s premium pricing and recapture European market share lost during the extended launch delay.
