Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit 2023 just delivered the flagship chip of 2024: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Built on TSMC’s 4nm process with a revised prime core architecture, the 8 Gen 3 brings a new Cortex-X4 prime core clocking at 3.3GHz and a dramatically overhauled AI engine. On-device generative AI is the centrepiece of this launch.
For the first time, Qualcomm is demonstrating running large language models — Llama 2 at 7 billion parameters — entirely on-device, at usable speeds. This is the first mobile platform capable of local generative AI inference without cloud dependency. The privacy and latency implications are enormous.
GPU performance leaps forward too: the Adreno 750 is claimed to be 25% faster while running at lower power. Ray tracing matures into a practical feature rather than a demo showcase. The Hexagon NPU delivers 98 TOPS of AI compute — making the 8 Gen 3 the most AI-capable mobile chip ever shipped.
Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, and Honor all confirmed as launch partners. The Galaxy S24 series is expected to be the first commercial device.
