Microsoft Bing Gets ChatGPT Powers: The AI Search War Has Begun

Microsoft Bing AI powered by ChatGPT

Microsoft just fired the opening shot in the AI search wars. At a press event in Redmond, the company unveiled a completely reimagined Bing powered by GPT-4 — a conversational search engine that answers questions, summarises web content, writes drafts, and maintains context across a multi-turn session, all directly within the Bing interface.

The new Bing features a side-by-side layout: traditional search results on the left, and an AI-powered chat panel on the right. You can ask follow-up questions, request rewrites of documents, plan trips, and debug code — all without leaving the browser. Edge gets a new “Copilot” sidebar that brings the same capabilities to any web page you’re browsing.

Google’s response — a hastily announced Bard demo — contained a factual error visible in the promotional video, causing Alphabet’s stock to drop 9% in a single day. The contrast was stark: Microsoft was ready, Google was not.

A waitlist is now open at bing.com/new. The search engine monopoly, unchallenged for over a decade, is finally facing real competition.
