E3 2009: Nintendo Announces New Super Mario Bros. Wii With Four-Player Cooperative Platforming

Nintendo unveiled New Super Mario Bros. Wii at E3 2009, introducing four-player simultaneous cooperative platforming to the 2D Mario formula while targeting casual family audiences intimidated by 3D Mario Galaxy’s complexity and motion control requirements.

Developed by Nintendo EAD, New Super Mario Bros. Wii revives classic 2D side-scrolling gameplay from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World while adding unprecedented four-player chaos. Players control Mario, Luigi, and two Toads simultaneously navigating levels, cooperating to reach difficult platforms or competing for power-ups and coins in friendly rivalry.

The cooperative design creates emergent gameplay unavailable in single-player—players can lift and throw each other to reach high platforms, bounce on each other’s heads to cross gaps, or accidentally knock teammates into hazards through poor timing. The Bubble mechanic allows fallen players to respawn in protective bubbles, reducing frustration when one player lags behind skilled teammates.

Nintendo positioned New Super Mario Bros. Wii as accessible entry point for families and casual gamers who found Super Mario Galaxy’s 3D perspective and motion pointer controls overwhelming. The familiar left-to-right scrolling, simple jump mechanics, and cooperative forgiveness lower skill barriers while maintaining Nintendo’s trademark level design excellence.

Industry observers view the announcement as Nintendo doubling down on Wii’s casual audience strategy rather than courting core gamers disappointed by E3’s lack of hardcore-focused announcements. The November holiday release timing targets families shopping for accessible multiplayer experiences, positioning New Super Mario Bros. Wii as Wii’s flagship holiday exclusive against Microsoft and Sony’s mature-rated shooter lineups.
